I think that American can lure women back into the workforce; it is going to take alot of change and understanding on all parts. Americans are working for money and that is what every American wants ands strives for. Now that the economy is in a recession that need and want for money has surely increased. They will also have to insure equality and they will need to show it. The women would also need higher pay and an easier way to advance themselves which would come along with the inequality. It is important that they do not have unfairness and they treat men exactly how they treat the women. Respect is a big issue in the workforce and that is what women rarely ever get even if they deserve it. American can lure women back into the workforce but they will have to make changes because if they do not they will be losing alot of women. Women now days are more independent and they are more powerful then they were years ago. One downside might be that these women are so used to being home that they may not want to leave their families at all and they do not want to go to work. They might just rather get help from the government instead of going to work taking time away from their families. There are many reason why the women are no longer working and it could be because the inequalities at their last job that would restrict them from going back to work because they do not want to see that same thing happen to them again. Many times women would rather stay home then work because they don't feel that they want to or have to work. I would believe that even though some women may not go back to work no matter what I do believe that there will be many women that will see this as the perfect opportunity to suppport themselves and to support there children.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) wrote a document that was trying to make a business go above and beyond the minimum requirements to promote work and balancing family. The EEOC understands that it is a necessity that care giving is required and they are realizing that the employees need that care giving option. This document goes on to remind employers that they are not being paid for the hours after they clock out and that these caregivers are working for pay. The document also says that their has been a major change within families because many of their husbands have been laid off and now the women havee to go to work while the men tend to the children and they take care of the household. This document is stressing that the work environment needs to be family friendly but the down side is that when the women go to work they are not making the same amount of money their husband would. This family friendly idea will make it less stressful for the caregivers and they would be able to make money and feel successful. The work and family life is not balanced and unevenly distributed. Flexible hours need to be put in the work place because many people have many different issues that they need to be home one reason or another. These women are struggling to stay and continue to be successful while also trying to take care of their family.

Women lawyers face many challenges that may constrict them from moving up in the legal system. Mothers are more important to hold together their family than what the fathers role is. The mother unfortunately has choices to make between her family or her job and if she decides to make her work more important than her family then she is labeled as a bad parent. Women are now trying to make a difference in the legal system because their are increasing statistics, it would be unfair for the women end up quitting their jobs because they are not getting the times off that they need to take care of their kids. This is not allowing women to advance in their positions and this is why the leadership of women is very minimal. Women are attending college and they are trying to further their education and their knowledge in the legal system but in many ways they are being held back from advancing in their professions. Women also face many stereotypes that make them looked down upon. Women are not allowed to be aggressive because if they are then they have anger issues but if a man was to do so they are just striving for what they are trying to get. If a woman shows that she is upset or sad then she is a very emotional person and she can't make those tough decisions that are needed to make. When a man shows the same emotion then he is caring and a bit sensitive. This is only keeping women down and away from enabling themselves to advance just like the males do. Women are facing these harsh challenges which are not allowing women to be equal just like the men are. In this society it is important to be fair because we have been changing out ways since years ago, but the women are still not being treated fair.

Women lawyers and men lawyers are very different when is comes to parenting. When it comes to parenting it depends on what the mother and father planned to do with their children and what roles they decided to take. Women are supposed to be the caretaker of the family according to the gender expectations and the men are supposed to work the odd hours to support his family. With the mom being a lawyer she needs to be ready for some insults because she will be called an unfit mother if she is not home with her kids when they need her. It may be very hard for the mother to always be with her children and she may need to have someone else watch her kids or even take them places but she will also be called an unfit mother because she is choosing work over her kids. Men have a very different role in the family they are expected to not be home with their kids during the day. They would be called an unfit dad if they were the ones staying home all day to watch the kids and take them to and from school. It is important that the family does spend time together but if a women does want to be a lawyer the family already knows that their mother will be a very busy person because of the amount of work that she has. Males are expected to work extra hours and to be busy throughout the day, to busy that they can't be with their kids. Women on the other hand are expected to work very minimal hours if they even work at all, but if they don't work then how are they being successful? Success and knowledge is very important in today's society because there is new technology and now days people continue to go to school to get a profession that they could have that will bring them a lot of money. Although with men, they also want to be an involved parent and as a lawyer that would restrict their times that they get to spend with their child so it also becomes hard for the men that want that time off to spend with their kids. There are also those men that are single parents that should be able to have flexiable hours because they are the only ones that are able to tend to their childrens needs. There is a high importance with child care and they need to be changed so that the children of these lawyers are not the ones being hurt.

In every family you will most likely find them trying to juggle work, kids, school, and other activities. In legal professions the parents face the same things and they always have to miss time with their families because of the extensive amount of work they have to do. The problem with women is that they are the ones that take care of the kids the majority of the time so they find it very hard t0 be away from their kids. Women lawyers have to find a balance between working as a lawyer and working as a mother, and at times it may be very difficult. Many times women find themselves needing to be at two places at once but at the same time they are also working at their office and they need to be there too. Mothers really need to have flexible hours because they are the primary care taker of their kids. Having flexible hours may not allow them to have great credibility because they are taking off of work to tend to their kids. This may make them receive more criticism because they are missing a lot of work and they may not be depicted as real lawyers because they are hardly ever there. They should also have telecommuting available to them because there are many times when kids get sick and they need to be home. Allowing them time off of work throughout the day may conflict with their clients and they could begin to lose their client which means they will eventually lose their status in the firm also. When people see that their lawyer is working at scattered hours then it may seem that they are unreliable and you won't be able to reach them when you truly need to, so that will drive clients away from this lawyer. Even though there is a phone that could be used for communication while the lawyer is tending to her kids there still is a fear that they may never be able to meet face to face until the day of the trail and that may be unacceptable to many clients. Another problem is that telecommuniting will not be as effective because they do not have a supervisor standing over them or a male to apparently tell them what is right or what is wrong.

Very few minority women stay in law because they are treated differently then men and experience racism and discrimination. These women are judged not just solely on their gender but their ethnicity also, which makes it twice as worse. Just because someone is a minority doesn't mean that they give you permission to talk down on them or to look down on them, they are a person just like everyone else and they should be treated with respect no matter what. There are several minority women that try to advance themselves but when they get their cases their clients don't treat them right and they end up leaving because they are being mistreated. The stories of NPR relfect the frustration that former women lawyers have had with their law firms and the legal system as a whole. Even though we are supposed to be living in a society that is supposed to be equal we are instead facing and allowing males to chastise women. Many women leave because they are being mistreated and many times it is planned by the men because they want them to leave. They are either given a hard case or cases that they will continuely lose only because they are being discriminated against. Many women noticed that even if they were a minority that gave from a great prestigious school they would still be treated worse than a white male or female from a state school. These women work hard at what they do, and they should also be praised but unfortunately they are being mistreated and they are being pushed out of the legal system just because many males believe they are not equal to thm. Especially in the legal system there should not be an inequality because we go to the legal system for justice so what are they supposed to do when the inequality and unjustice is inside the system itself. It should not be the color of your skin or the gender that allows you to succeed or not it should rely on your ability to be good at what you do.

Sonia Sotomayor ws characterized as many different things, from the very beginning when she ws simply just nominated for the Supreme Court by Barack Obama. She was called a "fiery Latina woman" which was a common sterotype of Latina women for many years. Sotomayor was judged by her behaviors in the court from the media. When she was compared to a male his actions were seen as more acceptable then hers even if their actions were the same. Sonia is very tough and very quick and has an extremely good work ethic but that is all overseen because they are busy critizing her because she is a women and she is hispanic. She is seen as being a person that is rude and too tough but when a male did the same as her in the courtroom he was praised for his proformance. If Sonia decides to put up a fight she is seen as difficult and someone that is easily angered, basically she is looked down upon because of her actions, but if a male was to do the same thing he would be considered right for doing so. Males do not believe that they should hold such a high position in the workplace like the males currently have. The women are not able to work as a male because if they do they are look at as they are out of their character even if that is how they really are. To be a lawyer it requires you to be tough and to get the respones you need, Sonia knows what she is doing and went to school and learned how to be a lawyer just like the male lawyers did too. Sonia is seem as being at the same level as the other males she works with but the males find this disturbing and they try to push her down any way they can. Sonia is doing what she does best and she is trying to get justice out of what she does but because she is a woman people do not want her to act like she is a tough woman. Gender plays a huge role in the law profession.

Male are very much priviledge in the law profession and therefore they would be able to get better internships that would lead to better careers which would allow them to move up and provide better opportunities. This also allows them to become much more knowledgeable rather then the women in that same position. Women seem to be purposely left behind and are not able to get those big breaks like the men. Women are stuck in certain position for a very long time because they did not get to go too school when the males did or they were not able to advance themselves like the males did, this is why the women have to rely on the men when they are working on cases. It is as though the women are invisible in the workplace and they always have lots of work to do on a daily basis. Males are always getting praised by their bosses and colleagues for the work that they are getting done but the women get nothing even if they are doing more or better work than the male. Both male and female lawyers go to law school and get paid around the same amount of money but they are tampered because of the gender roles that the law profession is seeming to contribute to. Alot of jobs prefer to have males in higher positions because they are already looked at as dominant and this is providing another sterotype. This could also cause the male and females to fight and this could also lead into the courtroom. Male and females should not be very different because it is important that we do not show the gender roles but lawyers are showing that the male is still in the dominant position even if the female should show the same dominant status. Depending on your ability you should be able to move up and get promoted without a problem but in the law profession it seems that you need to be a male to move up or it will take a countless number of years to do so if you are female.

Many places do not let women work alone or with other women, therefore, women are mostly assisted by men with their cases. Gender roles are certainly the main practice in this department because they are insisting that a male be present when a female is working on her case so he can oversee this process. They are making sure that the female does everything right, and showing her that the male worker is obviously smarter than her if he is overseeing her work. In Gender on Trial there are some female lawyers that have discussed the times that they had to be assisted by a male and they were looked down because their clients were expecting a man instead of a woman. One woman in particurly talked about how she was talking to her clients about their upcoming trial and since they would not listen to her she had to ask a male to come in and talk to them just to get them to listen to what she has done for them. It seems as though men have more credibility than women do, but that is inaccurate. Another woman talked about how when she talks to her customers at work she sees them ask someone else that same qquestion as if they don't believe her. This is just showing that the law profession has many gender expectations because they are showing that mena are still the dominating roles in our society. Client choose to ignore the female lawyers because they don't see them as stable and secure and they would rather go to a male for an answer or to get the work done simply because they will feel comfortable about their work and their answers. These women do not feel like they are given the same credibility even though they should because they have went to the same type of schooling the male lawyers have. It is unfair for anyone to not listen to you or decided to take their case somewhere else just because you are a woman. Now days gender expectations should be different because we have different gender roles in our society.

Many times using sexualized behaviors as a weapon usually comes with many restrictions especially in the work place. People should be able to move up in which ever profession or job they have without having to use their body sexually in any way. Everything about sexualized behavior seems very bad to me I can;t really honestly say that there is any pros about this subject. The only thing would be that if a person does use this behavior they might be able to get their way and if they do get what they need and want then they would feel that this behavior was succesful. It depends on what type of person the boss is, now days it seems to be getting worse. There seems to be a lot of favortism going on in many workplaces and it seems to be getting worse as they go. If a woman were to use this behavior on her boss and her accepted the advances she would be able to move up in the company so that would mean she would get a raise and she could also get more hours or less hours whenever she needed to. When using this behavior it is really 50/50, you either get what you want or don't get anything at all. Allowing this behavior will only let this behavior to continue and will accept further sexualized behavior from other women. They would also be continuing to hire these certain type of women because they would expect that same bahvior from these women also. The boss would have total control of the matter and if it was a good boss it would put a stop to it as soon as it happens.

I talked to my aunt about the exppectations that the lawyers had since she was working with them on a day to day basis. They had many interns and those were the ones that would run their errands for food or drinks, or any little things they needed picked up. The interns would never work on a case alone at least because they were not trained well enough yet to be able to know what to do by themselves. She herself received alot of cases and at many times they were difficult to deal with especially when they were death cases or rape cases. The lawyers always seemed to be very professional while around her, they always talked to her with respect and was never too demanding with her, they recognized how much work that she had to get done for them. She would help them get ready for their next trial and many times spent many hours helping them prepare. She also commented about the ration of women to men in her work environment and she found it interesting to find that there was only one women working their and all other lawyers were male. This was something that she never noticed until I asked her, so gender expectation must not be as high where she works because of this example. The men lawyers never caused any problems and never acted any way they shouldn't be acting. She also said that the expectation for her department was to do most of the lawyers work they would set the paperwok up for the lawyer then when the case was done the lawyer would review it before the actual court date. Her job was very stressful and I'm sure the interns feel the same stress.

Chapter 2 of Gender on Trial discusses the difficult choices that the female attourneys have with their wardrobe choice inside the courtroom. This problem has been dated back to the 1960's when women began to enter into the law profession, so this topic is not a new discussion. Chapter 2 contines to say that tracing the way women change clothes indicates that we have a path form timidity to confidence, now our clothes show that women now have a greater individuality. Women before felt they were betraying their true identities with a male-style and now feel a stronger look because they have an outer look and an inner person.

Man tend to believe that women have it easy when it comes to dress because women have a greater range of clothing then men do. Men believe they either look formal or casual with whatever they wear. English states, "[W]omen's dress has ranged from masculine to feminine to casual to sexy means that women now have many more options for how to dress than they did in the past" (English, 2003, 32). Let's take Hillary Clinton for example, she has been an icon of entertanment for many years, she wears women's pant suits, which closely resemble a man's suit. Then there is Michelle Obame that is always seen wearing dresses with her hair down. She always looks very formal, and her appeal is very different from the women's pant suit. The media has started paying attention to her clothes now rather then what she is saying or the more important things. Tight clothing has also become popular, it seems if someone were to wear loose clothing they would not be seen as important or would not be taken as seriously.

Sotomayor was nominated for appointment to the US supreme Court by President Barack Obama in May of 2009. Her nomination was confirmed by the US Senate in August of 2009, she was the third female justice on the US SUpreme Court. She was also the second jurist to be nominated by a President. She was the first Hispanic woman, being a minoirty woman brings some level of discrimination. This discrimination was also brought on because she was a womanof power. When people think of her it is becasue she was hispanic and a women. She knew that she was looked at ont he basis of sterotypes and not on her work ethic. Her ethnicity and gender also made people believe that she would not be able to put aside her own personal biases with her judgments. She made sure that she said that she does not believe that any ethnic, racial, or gender group done not have an advantage in sound judgment. Many times Republican senators would confront her regarding remarks from her speeches, but she would point out her judical record and she made sure that she never let her own life experiences or opinions influence her decisions. Harsh allegations made against Sotomayor that have surfaced includes the most talked about which would be that she is a racist woman. Sotomayor makes sure that she assures the public that ethnicity does not give one group a greater ability to make sound judgments. Sotomayor seems to threaten the historical norm of white male power; if SOtomayor had been a white male chnces of any allegations would be slim to none. Her biggest problem is that she is a hispanic woman, if she was a white male or even possibly a white female she would not be getting talked about but unfortunatly we still have racism within the government.

The path to working as a correctional officer in a prison seems to be based on gender in how people will get into that field. The men will come from a military or police background, which allows them to have more background history then most women. Women correctional officers tend to come from backgrounds that have nothing to do with law or prisons. This pay will be more for women because they don’t have jobs that pay as well as correctional officers do, but for men it is less than some other jobs. Many officers that Britton interviewed said they basically drifted into their job. Also 44% of the men Britton interviewed said they came from the military so they had the military background to help them get in, which being a correctional officer can sometimes be similar to the military. Women usually don’t come from a military background or have been in the military, but they are told by someone that they are offering a job. Many times women have to be trained for the specific duties that they will be doing.

The money that they are getting to be a correctional officer is better than a woman would get if she just sat a desk all day. However, for a man it would be a little less than other jobs only because they have other male-dominant jobs such as construction that makes money because of the hard labor they are putting in. Many people that Britton interviewed say it was their best option because it offers good money and great benefits. Being a correctional officer will also allow people to get retirement when it is time to retire and it is still good money that they will get, enough to live well off of. It also allows good benefits for their family because they will have dental and medical which many people don’t have now days. They still have very well advantages because of the recession now days they are able to have money and live off of a good living as long as they stay at this position.

For a number of years prisons housed only men but when women finally gained access to the court system, and reformatories women began to also become incarcerated. When the population began to increase in the 80’s the women in prison also began to increase, however, the men did not increase as much as the women. Women were commonly thought of as non criminals even when they were incarcerated because they were not typical criminals. They believed that women were able to be taught how to behave and how to reform whereas, men were criminals and not likely to change. When prisoners were first housing women, middle class white women did not believe it was acceptable for women to house with men even if they were in separate confinements. The reason the women were held with men were because it was believed that the women were even worse than the male counterparts, so therefore, it was obvious that men were their appropriate guardians. Shortly after women were believed to be able to set themselves on the path of womanhood and women needed to be without men while incarcerated.
Prisons also gave white racists a place to display their racism and bigotry where they were also protected. Prison farms were where they kept the black male prisoners because they were believed to be accustomed to this environment during slavery. Male prisoners were always viewed as tough and violent and to be able to maintain and control a violent inmate it would require a masculine tough violent officer. The white prisoners were usually more protected due to the prominently dominant white officers in the prisons. Race was a huge issue in the prison sense because of the dominance of white.

As the rates of the population and incarceration continued to rise over the years, prisons had to include people of color into the prison houses. They would also need to add the women then they ran into the problem of overcrowding. Women were also now able to join the correction profession because of the very few officers to the prisoners. Now men and women are able to choose which facility they want to work in, either the men’s or the women’s.
Arizona does not change much as the others history over time. Arizona’s first prison housed men, women and children, as many of the other early prisons. The incarcerated ranged from a variety of individuals from minorities to people from foreign countries. The first prison in Arizona was built years after many other prisons but this is probably because Arizona was formed much later than other.

Britton used the theory of gendered organization to frame her research questions on occupational segregation both in general, and in the prison system. This theory provides separate levels which are structure, culture, and agency. These three different levels are thought of in a gendered separation. There is no organization that is gender neutral or that may presume as gender neutral, however, most organization are based on assumptions of gender segregation. These organizations effect jobs, careers in mind, and possible practices of organizations. Britton questions why this segregation is so persistent in both the public and the private sphere. Britton (2003) states “organizations are gendered at the level of structure” (7). She believs that when in the public sphere the women are given benefits such as maternity leave and child care. Employers are usually more tolerant with the tasks that women are given even if they do spill over into the duties of the private sphere. She believes that jobs are based on notions of gender and the importance of reproduction. She wants to know why women are being paid less than men even if they are in the same professional. She also has noticed that when women are in a male-dominant profession, the women still do the duties of a woman if possible, they will “conform to the requisites of femininity” (Britton, 18). Men usually have a corporate ladder that they will be able to climb as the years go on, whereas, women do not have the capability to climb that corporate ladder because of the jobs they have or the duties they are set in, because there is no real leader.

Women have not had the pleasure to be able to separate work from home whereas, men have that joy because they are not expected to look after the kids and cook dinner then go to work all in one day. Women have been expected to do everything in the household so the man can go to work to make the money but society has changed but the gender structure has not. When women joined the work force they were still expected to go above and beyond to hold the household down and make money.

The images in the media of prison guards and correctional officers are usually big built, muscular, tall, and they are men. They have weapons such as a gun, pepper spray, a baton, all weapons that will protect them against unruly prisoners if they get out of hand. They are usually mean and they do not make friends with the guilty they are there to keep them in line. They seem that they need to show the dominance and authority that they have over other people and may sometimes make sure that the prisoners know that they are inferior of them. Many people don’t believe that female guards are in male prisons because in the media they are hardly shown. When they do show women in prisons they are usually also masculine looking without make up and very tough looking. They hardly show emotion because that will make them look inferior to the prisoners and that could cause problems for the female officers.

Women in women facilities are usually not as uptight as they would be in a men’s facility because there is a much higher risk in a men’s facility. Men are much stronger than women so the women officers are not always feeling safe. Men in a women’s facility will be more generous they will be less violent and easy going unless they need to be strict. Men in a men’s facility seem to look stressed and they need to look tough. They also are more violent and they are more forceful because they need to show they are not inferior to the men. Women in a women’s society would also look less masculine and may be more polite. The women that are prisoners in a women’s facility are most likely to be more welcoming to men officers because they are seen as professionals, and look like they are experts in their job field.

Occupational segregation still exists because we have but emphasis on gender in our society especially when it comes to careers. Society presents male dominated jobs as those that are hard working, heavy lifting, odd hour type jobs. Women jobs are supposed to be those that work in offices or in schools as teachers, like a nine-to-five job. This type of gender socialization will lead people to certain types of professions that fit their gender and there schedule at home, no matter if they hate their job. Women are not generally know to work odd hours because they would not look like a good mother to the society because they have odd hours that does not allow them to take their kids to school, or help them with the homework. It may also make the man look bad if their wife is making more money than he is if she is working in a male dominant career.
Women are not generally encouraged to work as police officers, or in prisons or as security guards, even as construction workers. These professional are not welcoming to women because of the hours that will possibly interfere with their time with their kids. Society does not always accept the father being home while the mother is at work. The gender socialization is not only used when it comes to careers but also for in a family sense because there is a man and a woman in a family. The women are supposed to stay at home with the kids and help them with school work, but when they take on untraditional jobs they are looked as women that are trying to change the future and end the segregation and wage gaps that are present.

Women do gain advantages when they begin to break into untraditional careers specifically male dominate careers. The biggest advantage is that they would be able to make more money because usually male dominant jobs pay more because of the longer hours and difficulty of the work. The can also have great satisfaction because the succeeded against the odds. Not many women are able to get into those jobs even if they want to, also many women don’t try to get into those jobs because they do not think they will make it into that field. This allows women to have faith that they can enter into different fields with higher pay and have a job that they are interested in. Men can also have many advantages from this if they allow themselves to see these advantages. They can definitely learn from women, just the same as women will learn from men. They should look at these women as privileged women because they were able to better themselves and able to beat the odds.

Erin Brockovich would be a movie that I would think is about the working class and poor woman. Erin Brockovich starts off as an unemployed single mother of three, which wanted her attorney to find her a job in compensation of the loss of her lawsuit. Many women that Chaudry mentioned were unemployed with child they had to take care of. Whether they were losing a lawsuit or just not having any money they were both trying to care for their children on their own and usually without the governments help. Many women are also unemployed and wanting a job but they just can’t get away long enough to look for a job because they would need money for someone to pay for the child care while she was out. This movie shows that a women with very little experience at a job can become the most important person because they are completing tasks and going above and beyond. Erin Brokovich does not give her kids the attention they want because she is working more than she is seeing them; they start to crave their moms attention. Many kids in this book are being left with another person they don’t know and not being able to see their mother for hours at a time. The children have to learn to be happy for the time they do see their mother and to enjoy what she is doing for them. Chaudry believes that a child should have a close relationship with their mother and with the mother having long hours at work or long hours away from their kid is neglecting their time together, but the children need to understand that the mother is making money to help them survive.

The single women ran into problems paying the overpriced child care that more times than none they would have to turn to kin care. In “Putting Children First Chaudry talked about women that were on welfare that were providing kin care for those other women struggling to pay for child care. These women preferred the kin care program because it wasn’t costing the women as much as child care. The struggle with kin care was the mothers would have to drive their child from place to place and sometimes the women watching their children were not reliable. The welfare system often failed to submit the money when they were supposed to. This began to make them unstable and put stress in their work life. When the families started making an income the welfare system believed that they did not need the governments assistance anymore, even though this lead to more problems because they had the either the same or lesser amount of income coming in. The Welfare system would usually provide when the mothers need it least and would most likely fail when the mother needs the money most. The women were require to work and supply for their family as best as they could and they needed to find money any way they could. They would have to use their subsidized money if they were able to obtain it, most times they were not able to get the government money and it does not allow them to care for their children’s health or even their health.
Not everyone is lucky enough to receive help from their family members or able to get a flexible day care. There have been, many mothers that have been left with no assistance because the father is either in jail or in no shape to pay for child support. With the absence of the father it is very hard on the woman when she is left to pay for her kids by herself and sometimes without the governments help. Having mothers that are struggling for money and food all their lives will hopefully want them to better themselves so they would not have the stress their mother had when they become a parent. Another main issue that these women struggled with was being able to take their kids to the doctors when they got sick or even taking themselves to the hospital when they got sick.
Chaudry suggests that we provide more ways women could get financial help because even if a single mother is working she is not getting enough money to get the child care or even enough to put food on the table. She believes the government should run child care facilities that the whole working class would be able to use fairly and worth it. Women that are showing that they are working and trying to support their child should be able to get a good child care and one that they know is safe and useful. Chaudry shows that women are not being able to take the promotions in their work life because they times will run into the child care time or they are unable to leave them at a certain time, leaving them with no reliable help to watch their kids. Also if the women wanted to have another job or more up in their work life then would also want healthcare to keep them healthy and able to work. Working will only provide experienced which is very important to them because they need all the money they could get, especially if they are trying to get out of poverty. Many women in poverty are struggling to make ends meet and not only paying their bills they also need to be able to put food on the table. The government is taking the financial programs away and now more and more people are in need the help of the government and more people are ending in poverty because of the prices of housing, and bills. Chaudry wants the low income women to be able to receive help so their children can be put into a child care that will be useful and beneficial to their child.

The relationship between working poor women’s conditions and children living in poverty are similar. Children who are currently living in poverty were most likely brought into that poverty because their mother lived in a poor neighborhood too. There could be a possibility that many women had their children at a young age and had no choice but to raise their child in a poor community. The poverty stricken mothers are working to support their child as best they could and the child can’t do anything to help their mother get out of the struggle they are living now. It is not always the mother’s fault either because many of them get left behind when the fathers go to jail or the father is in no shape to help out with the expenses the children need. It also becomes very hard for a mother to hold a stable job or even get a good paying job at all because of the area she is living it. From the charts I find that the statistics show that the younger the child the higher the poverty the child will be in. This happens because when the child is at its youngest point their mother is unlikely to have work experience and all they will be able to get is minimum wage at the lowest position. As the women gets older and her child gets older she will be able to obtain more working experience and knowledge in her job field, which will provide the family with a better living situation. These women are trying to better their families and hope that they will be able to get out of their living situation as soon as they can. If the mothers are not able to at least they will get their child out by trying to give them the best education to further themselves.

Living in urban poverty left single mothers working hard to support their kids while most of the fathers were in jail. In these bad communities it is hard for the children to stay away from the drugs and violence because it is all around them. Low- income mothers are less likely to get any job that pays more than minimum wage. This disadvantage makes it hard for them to support their family and keep them healthy. The urban poverty is most likely on welfare because there is loss of a father whether he is in jail or just not in the child’s life. There is also poor functionally schools which is not allowing the child a fair and educated learning experience. Poverty was setting the children back from having a social life because there were not many people in their area that would be good people to play with, so it started at a young age. The difference between being a poor women in a poor area and a person of low income wage in a mixed income neighborhood would be that it would be more people can he can mix and socialize with. They would also have less drug use and abuse because they would have others around them that are having regular paying jobs and in a community that is a better one for children. Being a mixed income it would provide better schools and better education for the children. It would also help the single mothers because they would feel safer, being able to see if a neighbor could watch their child.

Julia applied at the Agency for Child Development for subsidized day care, but there was already a long waiting list so she was placed on the bottom of that list. If she would have been working or going to school then she would have been considered before most of those on the waiting list because her child care would have been listed as a priority. Julia then heard from a friend about Leida having a day care at Mayer House so she took Jacqueline and Hope there but not long after they started going there they had to end it because the Welfare program’s system was late on making payments. She then had Sonia watching Jacqueline and her cousin watching Hope but she began to need Jacqueline to stay longer than the other kids stayed because of her work hours. She had to pay Sonia more money to keep Jacqueline longer and it was more then she had to pay her cousin, which led her to more money problems. She then applied for food stamps and she was accepted to get food stamps and the cash aid that came with the food stamps but the Welfare Department failed to give her the cash aid when she was supposed to receive it. Minimum wage jobs do not allow women to further themselves in more jobs so they can pay the bills and keep their children in child care. They are limited on the time they can work and how long they work; it is sometimes hard for them to get one full time job just because they have to be on a certain schedule. “Julia and Jacqueline’s story illustrates the fast-changing nature of child care and the interactions between Jacqueline’s care , Julia’s work situations, and changes in their domestic life” (Chaudry, 93) Child care isn’t convenient and worry free like some of the lucky people, there are those that struggle to work because their kids needs to be supervised. Chaudry states, “It was when Jacqueline was in her most stable care arrangements that Julia was able to move from progressively better internship experiences into a full-time job and off of welfare” (94).

Low income mothers are in need of child care but they face obstacles because of the cost of child care doesn’t meet with what they are earning while working. According to the power point child care is easily costing 4,000 to 6,000 on average per year. Many low income women are single mothers and are supporting their families by themselves on a minimum wage job. Even though they have a job many times it is hard for the mothers to pay for the child care because they have bills to pay and kids to feed. If they don’t have child care they will sometimes have to pleasure to have a family member watch their kids for cheap. On the other hand as the power point stated, “Many parents have no family nearby, or find their families too busy with their own jobs and children, to utilize their kin networks for child care.” Low wage paying jobs does not allow flexibility in anyone’s hours. With the child care that they could afford does not always accommodate to the times they need the child care so they are constantly asking for help. This care also leaves them not being able to choose the safe child care, or the place where they know their child will benefit from it. Safety is an important issue because in the low income housing it is a dangerous place.

Chaudry is implying that legislation emphasized work, and did not provide enough new supports for those families in need, and they also cut the supports of the families that they already had. Families were forced to send their children into care that was cheap and not great quality. The women were not allowed to be picky about where they sent their kids for the child care it was only the money issue that they were able to be concerned with. The needs of disadvantaged children were neglected because single mothers needed to carry out their dual role as a worker and a parent. It did not work out because of the needs the child had, it becomes harder when the women is a single mother because the money she made wasn’t helping with the bills plus feeding them when they were hungry.
The issue of the working poor is a public one more than it would be a personal problem because there are many people going through the same problems. Many people know what the working poor is even if they are not the working poor themselves. The working poor is not being able to make ends meet but still working full time and maybe overtime. Having the bills add up and having creditors call to lend you money because it is known that you are the working poor will only add on to the debt they are currently in. The working poor also lives in certain housing so that would be a public view that you are the working poor because of the house or apartment they can afford. Even if the issue might feel like a personal problem it is also very public, public enough that others would want to help if they were in a position such as president and was able to make a difference.

I chose my blog handle because that is my nickname that everyone calls me, so I kept it very simple. My major is BIS with the concentrations of Justice and Communications, I am currently in my senior year. I chose this class because I recently took a womens studies class and learned alot but this class caught my attention because of the womens studies I took because I wanted to learn more about women and the issues of working that many women have been facing.

Women, work and justice is the problems that women faced while being in the work environment or trying to pursue their careers and were held back because of their gender.
Issues of justice is important to me because there are still many injustices in the work enviroment that women are faced with daily. Sexual Harrassment has become the main type of injustice that many women are facing in the present day and many times the woman does not get the justice that should be taken in their case. Justice is very improtant in many ways because it is the fairness of ones crimes or maybe could be justice of ones overall goodness. Women play a big part of this society and fairness has not always been equal between men and women.
